RULES AND REGULATIONS
Grades: 9th – 12th
LAW DAY 2009: A Legacy of Liberty: Celebrating Lincoln’s Bicentennial
Essay prompt: What does Lincoln’s Legacy mean to Me?
The way Lincoln is remembered has evolved over time.
The Bicentennial of his birth is a time to think about
how
our views of this historical figure have been shaped and changed.
ELIGIBLE STUDENTS:
Entries in the law day essay will be grouped in one division:
Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Grades
AWARDS TO BE GIVEN:
1st place: $100.00 US Savings Bond and Ribbon
2nd place: $ 75.00 US Savings Bond and Ribbon
3rd place: $ 50.00 US Savings Bond and Ribbon
Winning essays will be posted on the 16th Judicial Circuit Website. www.Keyscourts.net and may be published in the Local Newspapers.
DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES:
1. Essays must be 300 words or less, typed, and double spaced or neatly handwritten. The title, citations, footnotes, and bibliography will be excluded from the 300-word limit.
2. Each student may submit only one (1) entry.
3. All entries are to be reviewed by the students’ teacher(s)/parent(s) if home schooled.
4. Each entry must include a cover sheet indicating the student’s name, home address, telephone number, the teacher’s name, and the school name, phone number and e-mail address.
5. Deadline for entries is Wednesday, April 20, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. Please submit all Lower Key submissions to the Freeman Justice Center, 302 Fleming Street, Key West Florida 33040, Attention: Cheryl Alfonso;
Submit Middle and Upper Keys submissions to the Plantation Key Courthouse, 88820 Overseas Highway, Tavernier, Florida 33070, Attention: Isis Majeska on or before that date. They may also be faxed to (305) 292-3435 Lower Keys or (305) 853-7367 Middle and Upper Keys. You MUST include the information requested on the cover sheet.
6. A committee of Lawyers & Court Personnel will select the first, second and third place winners. Essays will be judged on format, clarity, style, reasoning, creativity and overall effort.
7. Submitted entries cannot be returned. The 16th Judicial Circuit retains the right to reproduce any essays submitted, whole or in part.
